Where do I look to find out what gears I have?

I finally got my hands on my new/used truck. I picked her up last night. I love it. This is my first ford truck. It's an 2003 F150 Fx4 4x4 with 5.4L. Where do I look to find out what gears I have? I got a heck of deal cause it has a little body damage but it was only $14,500 with 45k miles on her. I need to buy new tires and want to upgrade to 33s.

If you look at the Vehicle Certification Label located on the drivers door
(or "B" pillar), you can find the axle code. The chart below is for 05 but I think it covers a few years. My truck is an 03 and it has the 3.55 l/s (H9)

Axle Type

* 19 - 3.55 non-limited slip
* 25 - 4.10 non-limited slip
* 26 - 3.73 non-limited slip
* 27 - 3.31 non-limited slip
* B5 - 4.10 limited slip
* B6 - 3.73 limited slip
* H9 3.55 limited slip
Nice truck, too! Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. How bad is the body damage?

oh cool, thanks for your help... I just went and looked. I have B6 so 3.73. Sweet, I was hoping I'd have those. I want to put some 33s on 16x10. Do you think those will fit on my truck and be ok for 33s? I just want to put some BFG A/T. Right now I have the stock tires 265/70/17 but they are really worn.

The body damage is quite minimal in my opinion.. The guy said it got side swipped in a parking lot. It's just a few small scraps along the drives side of the truck along the bottom. Most noticable by the front wheel well. I'm not paying to get it fixed though, I don't think it's worth it. Truck runs frigg'n awesome. I love it.

You have 16" wheels or 17" wheels?? I would think the 17x10 would fit. You might encounter some rubbing issues depending on the backspacing and offset of your wheel.
Your best bet......post this question in the "tires/wheels" section for Wandell. He seems to have a real good grip on aftermarket wheels/tires and any kind of fitment problems.
I have 16x8 w/ 265/70/16's on my rig. The inner part of my wheel barely clears the brake calipers.
Sorry if I can't be of more help. I normally stay close to stock when adding on to my rigs so......I'm not real familiar with aftermarket fitments, etc.

they are 17. You are probably right, I should try to find something for 17 inch wheel rather than going smaller.

I have a 2004 f150 4x4 xlt and just put 265/70 17 BFG a/t ko's on it. You said that your 265s were stock but mine came with 235/17 17s stock. The larger BFGs fit just right no rubbing but they did fill the front wheelwells about as far as I trusted going without adding a leveling kit. I was considering 285s but it would change my final drive ratio more than I wanted as well as making my speedo off by 5 mph @ 70 (speedo reads 70 actually doing 75) I think the 265s changed the final drive ration from 3.55 to 3.47:1. Not really what I wanted but since I don't tow anything I can live with it

I looked on the door sticker and sure enough, it says 265/70/17 . Interesting how they put different size tires on your truck than on mine. I don't enough about these trucks yet to tell the differece between an 03 and 04 but I'm sure that has something to do with it. My truck feels pretty dang fast with the tires it has on it now so I don't think bumping up to a 285/75/16 or 305/70/16 is going to make that much of a difference. Guess, I'll find out... lol. I just hope they fit on my truck with the 16x10 wheels. I love the wide tire look

The new trucks can't run rims smaller than 17, so they put low profile 17" tires on to be cheaper for the not so fancy truck. My truck came with 235/75-16's on it, the older FX4's came with 265/75-16's and usually had either 3.73 or 4.10 gears.
